Step 1: find the written rule
- The course outline or syllabus for this class.
- The student handbook or academic integrity policy.
- The assignment brief. It can be stricter than the course rule.
- If none of them answers it, email the teacher with one exact question, such as "May I use an AI tool to check my grammar?" Keep the reply.
Three ways to use it that are more often allowed
Rules differ, so check yours first. These keep the thinking and the writing yours.
1. Explain it. Ask for a topic in plain words.
Explain something simply
Explain [topic] as if I am 12 years old. Use one everyday example. Then ask me 3 questions to check that I understood.
2. Quiz you. Practise before a test.
Quiz me
Quiz me on [topic]. Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer. After each answer tell me what I got wrong and why. Do not give me the answers before I try.
3. Check your own draft. You write it, the tool points at the weak parts.
Check my own draft
Here is my draft. Do not rewrite it and do not add facts or sources. List the 3 weakest points, and 3 questions a reader might ask that I have not answered. Draft: [paste]
What usually crosses the line
- Handing in text the tool wrote as your own when the rule does not allow it.
- Letting it invent quotes, sources or numbers. Tools do make these up.
- Using it in a test or exam where it is not allowed.
- Not saying you used it when the rule asks for a note.
Keep your own trail
Save your notes and your drafts with their dates, and use the version history of your document. If anyone ever asks how you worked, you can show it.
If you are accused
- Stay calm and ask what the evidence is, in writing.
- AI detector tools can be wrong and can flag writing that a person wrote. A detector score alone should not settle it.
- Show your notes, drafts and version history.
- Read the appeal steps in your handbook and ask your student union or an adviser at your school.
- We cannot give legal advice.
Questions
Can teachers tell if I used ChatGPT?
Sometimes they suspect it from a sudden change in style or from invented sources. Detector tools exist, but they can be wrong. This page is not about avoiding detection. The safe route is to follow your school's rule.
Do I have to say I used AI?
If your course or school asks for it, yes. If the rule says nothing, ask. A short note on how you used it is a safe habit.
Can I use it to fix my grammar?
Some courses treat grammar help differently from writing the content, but it varies. Ask your teacher and keep the reply.
