Should I ask ChatGPT or search Google?

The difference in one minute
A search engine finds pages written by other people and shows you where they are. You read the source. A chat tool writes a new answer, from patterns and from the text you give it. It does not hand you a source by itself, and it can be wrong while sounding sure. Some chat tools can also search the web, and some search engines show an AI summary, so the line is blurry. The habit stays the same: know whether you are reading a source or a written answer.
Which for which job
- Search first: opening hours, prices, deadlines, news, official forms and rules, whether a website is real, anything with a date.
- Chat tool first: rewriting an email, shortening a text, explaining a word or an idea simply, making a checklist from your own notes, practising a conversation.
- Both: planning a trip (a chat tool for a draft plan, search for times and prices), choosing between two products, learning a new topic.
A 3-step way to use both
- Ask the chat tool for a plain explanation, and ask it to list the facts you should check.
- Search for each of those facts and read the official page.
- Go back to the chat tool with the facts you checked and ask for the final text.
Tell me what to check
Answer my question in plain words. Then list the facts in your answer that I should check on an official page (names, numbers, dates, prices) and what to search for each one. Do not invent sources. Question: [ask]
More on why: how to check an answer in three steps.
One thing to watch in search
Some results at the top of a search page are adverts. They are marked, so look for the label before you click.
Questions
Is ChatGPT better than Google?
Neither is better. Search is for finding sources and checking facts. A chat tool is for writing, rewriting and explaining. Pick by the job.
Can ChatGPT search the internet?
Some chat tools can, depending on the tool and the plan. Check the tool's own page. When it shows links, open them yourself.
Why does ChatGPT give a different answer each time?
These tools write the answer fresh each time, so the wording and sometimes the content change. If the facts differ between answers, check them on an official page.
